Unicorn Ingredients, a leading British supplier of seeds and other ingredients for the bakery and specialist breads markets has announced the opening of a new office in Germany* to further improve the service it provides to its existing customer base throughout Europe and open up new business opportunities.
“Our sales in Continental Europe have shown steady and sustained growth,” said joint managing director, Frank Horan. “We feel the market is ripe for a new supplier, particularly one with our strengths in distribution.”
The decision to base the new office in Germany reflects the strength of this market for seeds. The German market is among the largest and most mature in Europe; for sesame seeds alone it is estimated to be three times greater than that of the UK. According to CBI Market Intelligence (November 2015) Germany is Europe’s biggest importer of sesame seeds, most of which are used in its strong bakery industry as ingredients in bread and crackers or as a topping on snacks such as pretzels and pastries.
“We believe that by opening a local office staffed by experienced industry professionals who speak the language we will be able to supply the very best customer service, which is something Unicorn always aims to do,” confirms Frank Horan.
The new office opened in August 2016 and is located near Münster, in North-Rhine Westphalia. It has two permanent full-time members of staff. In charge of sales is Vera Grosse-Drieling whilst Marion Nitze ensures the new operation runs smoothly, both join Unicorn from Goldene Mühle GmbH & Co.

Unicorn is a supply chain specialist with an existing and extensive operation across mainland Europe. Its direct operations are closely involved with every stage of the supply chain, from production, transportation, importation, warehousing and supply to European wholesale ingredients markets. It has four warehouses already located in Europe and is able to supply mixed loads. This network, and Unicorn’s expertise in freight logistics and transportation, means customers can be confident of the continuity of supply.
This move is the latest in a series of expansions that has already seen Unicorn extend its operations in India and China in recent months.
